History and Scope of Services
Family Planning Health Services, Inc. (FPHS) is a private, non-profit, community based,
confidential reproductive health care provider in Central Wisconsin. Incorporated in 1973,
the agency was formed without stock and not-for-profit and operates under the policies of
a volunteer Board of Directors. FPHS provides services to anyone and everyone regardless of
age, income or marital status.
The agency grew from the time of incorporation in 1973 to the present
and now provides reproductive health care services in seven Central
Wisconsin counties: Adams, Juneau, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Portage
and Taylor. FPHS established and maintains an outreach site at Keenan Health
Center in Milwaukee to help meet the needs of the population in the west Milwaukee
area. FPHS provides WIC services (Supplemental Food Program for
Women, Infants and Children) in Langlade, Lincoln and Marathon counties.
Other programs incorporated include Early Identification of Pregnancy
(EIDP) and reproductive
health exams for women covered by the Wisconsin Well-Woman Program (WWWP).
Board of Directors - the FPHS volunteer Board of Directors consists
of professional and non-professional representatives from the seven
county Central Wisconsin area. Representatives come from the fields
of medicine, law, education, finance, local government and private citizens.
The corporate structure consists of an Executive Director and a management
team that oversee the work of the agency under the guidance of the FPHS
Board of Directors. The corporate offices are located in Wausau, Wisconsin
at 719 N 3rd Avenue.
Each county served has a clinic site managed by a team of individuals
consisting of a clinic nurse, nurse practitioner and (possibly) reception
staff/clinic assistants.
Basic reproductive health care services are provided in each county
served. FPHS does not provide medical prenatal care or sterilization
services (referrals are made to area medical providers). FPHS does not
provide adoption or abortion services; staff can provide basic information
about these services.
FPHS is a founding member of the Wisconsin Family Planning and Reproductive
Health Association (WFPRHA). FPHS officials and staff belong to many local and
state public health associations and groups. FPHS is considered a leader in
Wisconsin in the field of reproductive health care. In 2004, FPHS Executive
Director, Lon Newman, was one of ten individuals nation wide to be awarded the
prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program Award.
